WHAT IS WEDDING TOURISM?
You’ve probably heard the term destination wedding, and it may be something that you’re considering. However, you probably are wondering, what is wedding tourism, as that is a term that is tossed around a bit but is not as commonly known. Luckily, we have the answer for you and can help to determine if that is the right path for you.
What is Wedding Tourism?
In its simplest form, wedding tourism is your wedding or honeymoon if you take an international trip to get married or to celebrate the wedding. So for example, if you choose to take a three week trip across Europe for your honeymoon, you are participating in wedding tourism. Even though you are not taking your full wedding party there, you are a wedding tourist, and this is a full industry on its own. Wedding tourism can exist in any country, and the same goes for a couple who comes from England to celebrate their marriage in our country. Certain cities are popular wedding destinations, so they get a lot of wedding tourism, which can help to boost their revenue. For example, a destination wedding in Italy will actually help more than just the venue, but it will increase tourism because you are likely to set up some tours and dinners out and about for your guests to enjoy. Even if you don’t have activities planned, guests will likely stay a couple of days before and/or after to get the full experience of the trip.
While the general definition of wedding tourism relates to international weddings and honeymoons, the term technically does stretch to other areas. For example, Walt Disney World in Florida is a popular honeymoon destination and is growing in weddings, which is helping it to become a part of wedding tourism. Now, people aren’t just attending Disney for the parks, but are instead attending wedding events, whether that is a wedding or even a bachelorette party.
While you may be unfamiliar with the term wedding tourism, it is not a new concept and has been around for several years. It can also be used in reference to wedding packages that include everything, including day trips for the bridal party or for the happily married couple.
